Why I Recommend LHSI
LHSI gave me a space to grow professionally in a supportive environment. It connected me with mentors, taught me how to navigate professional settings, and gave me the chance to apply what I learned in class to real research!
I chose to become an LHSI Ambassador because I wanted to be a visible example of what’s possible, especially for first-generation students like me who may not realize that professional development opportunities like LHSI are within reach.
Throughout my own LHSI internship, I grew tremendously, both professionally and personally. I knew that if I could share my experience with others, through outreach, mentorship, and storytelling, I could inspire more students to take that first step.
My goal was to be a relatable, encouraging, and authentic presence, someone students could look at and say, “If she can do it, I can too.”
My Reason
This role has been a rewarding experience, and I'm excited by the new skills I've developed, particularly my ability to shift from being a mentee to an empathetic leader who can design and execute programs that address a community need. My strongest takeaway is my improved capacity for proactive problem-solving and interpersonal communication. Nonetheless, LHSI has been a meaningful stepping stone in my journey, opening doors to new opportunities and growth that I might not have found elsewhere.
When I started as an ambassador, I identified three key areas I wanted to improve in:
Speaking to large groups confidently: I wanted to become more comfortable presenting in public and representing a professional program like LHSI.
Mentoring peers: I was excited to guide other students, especially those who might be hesitant to apply or unsure of their path.
Learning how to network effectively: I wanted to practice professional conversations, build meaningful connections, and develop my ability to navigate professional spaces.
As an ambassador, I aimed to lead by example and be a role model for students navigating their academic and professional journeys. I hoped to refine my public speaking skills, grow in confidence when presenting to groups, and learn how to effectively communicate my story in a way that empowers others.
I also wanted to gain behind-the-scenes insight into program management and student engagement—developing the skills needed to plan events, build relationships, and help shape the next generation of interns.
Serving as an LHSI Ambassador has been one of the most meaningful leadership experiences of my college journey.
I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about always having the right answer—it’s about being present, adaptable, and creating space for others to thrive. Whether I was helping students during tabling events, assisting with info sessions, or answering questions one-on-one, I found joy in being a supportive voice and mentor.
One of the most impactful moments for me was when a student told me they only applied to LHSI because of a conversation we had. That moment reminded me how powerful encouragement can be. LHSI isn’t just an internship—it’s a launchpad. And being able to help others recognize that potential in themselves was an honor.
“Leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice—it’s about making space for others to be heard.”
This is the greatest lesson I’ve learned through my time as an LHSI Ambassador.
I’ve grown into a leader who listens deeply, supports others, and uplifts voices that may not always be represented. I’ve become more confident, more intentional, and more committed to helping others succeed, not just because it’s fulfilling, but because it’s necessary.
Through this role, I’ve realized that even small conversations can spark change. That’s the kind of leader I strive to be, one who makes others feel seen, supported, and empowered.
