An Original Work
Directed by Li Xie
Performed by ITI's 2023 Graduating Cohort

Rating: Advisory (Some Mature Themes)

Synopsis

An unspeakable tragedy has struck a quiet small town. To restore order, justice, and inner peace, the law compels the victims to get their hands dirty - but who will be held accountable?

Performed by the ITI graduating cohort of 2023, The Chair is an original work that raises questions on individual and collective responsibility, grief, and the desperate, at times absurd pursuit of justice in an unjust world. Who has the right to decide? When is justice served? What do we owe to each other in the balancing of scales?

This thought-provoking ensemble work is brought to life by five actor-students, incorporating their training in Asian Traditional and Western Contemporary forms with the clarity, rhythm, and stylistic precision of V. Meyerhold’s Biomechanics, taught by the play’s Director and ITI Acting teacher Li Xie.

Notes from the Director and Cast

Into our town the Hangman came
Smelling of gold and blood and flame—
And he paced our bricks with a diffident air
And built his frame on the courthouse square.

Thank you Li Xie and team!

Mika Oskarson Kindstrand –

Is there a right way to deal with grief and loss?
How do we find comfort amidst the pain?

– Choy Chee Yew –

Which will let us live peacefully - forgiveness or revenge?

– Abinaya Jothi –

Is grief the price we pay for love?
How do we live with it

– Cheng Kam Yiu (Yolanda) –

There is no good or bad
There is no right or wrong
There is only what you want and how far you’re willing to go for it
In the end, there will only be you- with your pain or with your guilt.

– Swathilakshmi Perumal –

Thank you everyone for your uniqueness
And V. Meyerhold, for Biomechanics

– Li Xie –

Support ITI

ITI is an independent theatre school founded on the belief that theatre has little meaning if it is not connected to life and society. Through the years, ITI has developed critically and socially engaged artists who are capable of working across cultural, linguistic, social and national boundaries, and who have contributed meaningfully to their cultures and communities.

ITI is a registered charity and an approved Institution of Public Character (IPC), and more than 60% of its income has to come from fundraising. Donations to ITI are eligible for 250% tax exemption and dollar-to-dollar matching by the government’s Cultural Matching Fund.

Your donations will make a critical difference and support ITI in its seminal work.
