SYNOPSIS
Intercultural Theatre Institute presents Steven Berkoff's adaptation of Metamorphosis, directed by Aarne Neeme and performed by the ITI graduating class of 2024. This gripping retelling of Franz Kafka's iconic novella melds abstract physical theatre and psychological drama with elements of dark comedy.
The story follows Gregor Samsa, a young man who wakes up one morning to find himself transformed into a giant insect. As he grapples with his new grotesque form, Gregor's once-supportive family begins to unravel, revealing deep-seated fears and hidden resentments. Set in a claustrophobic atmosphere with minimalist staging, the play explores themes of alienation, identity, and the crushing weight of societal expectations.
This adaptation of Metamorphosis remains faithful to Kafka's original work while showcasing Berkoff's unique approach to theatre. The result is a production that not only reflects on the fragility of identity and the human condition but also resonates with contemporary audiences facing the pressures of modern society.
STEVEN BERKOFF on METAMORPHOSIS
“I saw in him most marvellous exertions of the imagination working inside the desperations of a strangled soul, this frightened human being - and thereby releasing its horrors. He touched me in all my chords of being from grotesque to simple, sublime humanity. [...] The bug. Crushed, human Gregor - oppressed, small, introverted, pathetic, inadequate, self-conscious- a parallel for a human being that one finds truly heroic. Gregor’s struggles as an insect are indeed heroic. They are self-denying, they are overwhelming in the desperate struggle to overcome such a handicap, and are eventually death-giving. [...] We see the frailty of human endeavour, greed and ambition- the protective sanctuary of the bourgeois family.”
— Berkoff, Steven. The trial ; Metamorphosis ; In the penal colony : three theatre adaptations from Franz Kafka. Amber Lane Press, Oxford, 1988.
DIRECTOR'S NOTE
The style of the play belongs to the Theatre of the Absurd. As Ionesco describes it, “Dealing with emptiness, frustration, a world at once fleeting and crushing. The characters are not fully conscious of their spiritual rootlessness but feel it instinctively and emotionally. The fact of being astonishes us, in a world that now seems all illusion and pretence, in which all human behaviour tells of absurdity and all history of absolute futility; all language and reality appear to lose their articulation, to disintegrate and collapse, so what possible reaction is there left, when everything has ceased to matter, but laugh at it all.”
So the genre is Tragi-Comedy. Comedy for those who think; Tragedy for those who feel. Humankind is tragic in their fate; comic in their existence. All is reduced to the comic gesture, because human beings are seen as incapable of rising above their circumstances or their nature. The ridiculousness of their situation, makes their plight that much more horrible.
It always has been such a privilege and pleasure to return to ITI and work with such talented and dedicated people. The students are outstanding in their physical, vocal and imaginative skills, and the support and participation of the teaching staff is immeasurable. My thanks especially go to ITI teachers Wan Ching, Simon and Chin Huat. What I have particularly enjoyed about this cohort, is their close co-operation in meeting the challenges of this surreal piece. We have endeavoured to find a pathway through it, exploring Berkoff’s unique vision and approach, and hopefully have given you all a satisfying journey!

Steven Berkoff
Playwright
Steven Berkoff (b. 1937) is a British actor, playwright, and director, known for his intense, physical approach to theatre. His work often combines elements of classical texts, modern themes, and exaggerated, stylized performances. Berkoff’s adaptations of works like Kafka's Metamorphosis and Shakespeare’s plays reflect his commitment to the power of the body in conveying emotion and narrative.
Berkoff's approach to theatre is heavily influenced by physical theatre traditions, such as mime and commedia dell'arte, and he often uses minimalist sets and props to focus attention on the actors' physicality. He emphasises expressionism, with bold, exaggerated gestures, and vocal delivery, creating a heightened, sometimes surreal, performance style. His work challenges naturalistic acting, focusing instead on the dramatic potential of every moment. Berkoff's confrontational, often politically charged pieces are both visceral and provocative, making him a distinctive figure in contemporary theatre.
Franz Kafka
Author
Franz Kafka (1883–1924) was a German-speaking writer from Prague, known for his existential, surreal, and often nightmarish works. His most famous stories, The Metamorphosis, The Trial, and The Castle, explore themes of alienation, guilt, and the absurdity of human existence. Kafka's writing is characterised by its unique blend of reality and fantasy, creating an eerie sense of dread and helplessness.
Kafka had a deeply troubled relationship with his domineering father, Hermann Kafka, which profoundly influenced his life and writing. He felt emotionally crushed by his father’s overbearing personality, which Kafka later detailed in his famous Letter to Father. This unresolved tension fueled his feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and self-doubt, themes that pervade much of his work. Despite his literary talent, Kafka struggled with confidence and often requested that his works be destroyed after his death.
It is generally agreed that Kafka suffered from clinical depression and social anxiety throughout his entire life. He also suffered from migraines, insomnia, and other ailments, all usually brought on by excessive stresses and strains. He battled tuberculosis for many years before his condition worsened in 1924. Kafka spent his final months in a sanatorium near Vienna, where he died on June 3, 1924.
