Online courses use a lot of tools. Each of those tools has different accessibility recommendations for using them. This webpage lists the accessibility information pertaining to those tools in alphabetical order.

Blackboard Collaborate

If you require accommodations for videos, like closed captioning, you are required to contact the Office of Disability Services and your professor to coordinate live closed captioning prior to the Collaborate session.

Free Live Captioning

For free live closed captioning of sound from a phone call, video, video conference, or a person speaking, you can use a free automatic live captioning app on your smartphone, tablet, or other device for captioning.

  1. Apple users can download "Live Caption" for free. Google Play/Android users can download "TextHear Personal Hearing Aid" for free ("Live Caption" is not free on the Google Play platform). Both work the same, but each is free on different platforms.
  2. Select the microphone icon.
  3. Hold the microphone up to the speaker or the location of the sound.
  4. The audio/sound will automatically be transcribed into text.

Automatic captioning is provided so that everyone can enjoy your work. For best results, speak as clearly as possible and record your video in a quiet space. If you include any images, charts, or anything someone would need to see in your video, describe it in detail out loud so that everyone can enjoy your video.
