With a parent or guardian's permission, take a minute to go outside and look at your front or backyard for rocks. Use your notepad and writing utensil to answer the following questions:
Are there a lot of rocks in your yard area(s)?
Do the rocks look like they were there naturally or like they were put there? For example, are the rocks randomly placed by nature or are they placed on purpose by someone?
Draw a quick sketch of one of the rocks. Take note of some of the textures of the rock. Can you see different layers? Are there holes in the rock like a sponge? Feel free to add some color to your drawing if you would like to; scientists pay attention to details.
Based on all the information above, are you able to make a hypothesis as to what type of rock it is?
If you think you know what type of rocks are in your backyard, go and fill out the Google Form to the right.
