Adventure #4 Standards

Water Hazards

In this unit, learners gain an understanding of how water hazards, such as flooding, can occur based on the environmental conditions of an area. Students investigate the risk value of flooding in different hypothetical areas from several different perspectives including soil properties and infiltration rate. After completing this module, learners will have a holistic grasp on how and why flooding can occur on Earth's surface.

Disciplinary Core Ideas

A variety of natural hazards result from natural processes. Humans cannot eliminate natural hazards but can take steps to reduce their impacts.

Human activities in agriculture, industry, and everyday life have had major effects on the land, vegetation, streams, ocean, air, and even outer space. But individuals and communities are doing things to help protect Earth’s resources and environments.

Crosscutting Concept

Cause and effect relationships may be used to predict phenomena in natural or designed systems.

Science and Engineering Practice

Compare and refine arguments based on an evaluation of the evidence presented.
