Water shortages occur when there isn't enough water in a region or community to fulfill the water usage demands. Sustainability is the state of balance in which the usage of a resource does not exceed its availability. In many places across the world, this balance has been disrupted and many people are facing water shortages. Water is a global issue and the choices made in one country can very easily impact another. Water is important to all life on Earth!

Droughts can be severe or mild. In one such case of an extreme drought known as the Dust Bowl, the land became so hot and dry that the soil turned to dust. Harsh dust storms and lack of water prevented farmers from growing crops.
Agriculture is one of the largest inputs of contaminants and pollutants into natural water sources. Between the waste generated by livestock and the pesticides involved with growing crops, a lot of harmful chemical and bacteria find their way from farms into rivers and streams.

Scientists of all kinds must work together to solve global issues such as water shortages. Science is much more than reactions, tests, and laboratories. Scientists must be open-minded and considerate of others. After finding a solution, scientists have to figure out a way to make their solutions accessible to the communities who need them the most!
Idaho may not face water shortages very often, but many places in the world struggle with water shortages every year. It's important to make responsible water choices so that water can be available for those who really need it.
Experienced scientists have been able to come up with new technologies to help others access water more easily. Including the water cleaning technologies you learned about previously, as well as methods to use water more efficiently.
However, there are still ways for kids like you to help out too! You don't have to be an expert in water conservation science to help prevent water shortages.
