Now that you're done learning about streams, let's look at how these streams affect our landscape. This is often called geomorphology. It is pretty cool to look around you and understand how that landscape formed. Just like a real scientist, you can be a junior scientist and would be able to impress your friends with your knowledge.

STAGE I:
young stage
the channel is stable
water is making its first incision
straight channel
fast flowing
STAGE II:
young stage
the banks are stable and steep
stream bed is lowering
V-shaped valleys
STAGE III:
mature stage
banks are unstable
stream bed is becoming flatter and wider
stream starts to meander
moderate flow
STAGE IV:
mature stage
banks are unstable, less steep, and collapsing
flood plain
STAGE V:
old stage
gently sloping stable banks
beds are stable
oxbow lakes
slowest flow

Now, look around the streams you see and make a hypothesis of the stage of the stream bed. Talk to others about it and see what they think. Write your hypothesis in your field journal and any comments from others. Can you come to a conclusion?
