Professor Detlev Ganten, MD, PhD.

Prof. Detlev Ganten was born in Lüneburg (Germany) in 1941 and studied medicine at the Universities of Würzburg, Montpellier and Tübingen. He was a research scientist at the Clinical Research Institute in Montreal and earned his Ph.D. at McGill University 1973.

In 1975, Ganten was appointed Professor at the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Heidelberg. In 1991, he became the Founding Director and President of the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch. From 2004 to 2008 he was Chief Executive Officer of the “Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin”. He has held positions as President of the Helmholtz-Association of National Research Centres (HGF) (1997-2001) and was a member of the German National Ethics Council. He is a member of the Academy of the Sciences Heidelberg, Polish Academy of Sciences (Polska Akademie Umiejetnosci), Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina), Académie Nationale de Médecine (France) and Academia Europea.

Throughout his career, he has received many awards and honors including the Max Planck Research Award (1990), the Okamoto-Award (Japan,1990), the CIBA-Award of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research from the American Heart Association (1992) and a Dr. honoris Causa from the Universities of Iasi, Maastricht, Berlin, Coimbra, Montreal, Rome. Detlev Ganten has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit of Germany (2000), and is an Officer of the French Légion d’Honneur (2012).

As a research scientist in the field of genetics and genomics of cardiovascular diseases, Professor Ganten elucidated fundamental mechanisms of the pathophysiology and molecular biology of high blood pressure. He has a special interest in developing the concept of evolutionary medicine and to promote global health initiatives. In 2009, he founded the World Health Summit (WHS – www.worldhealthsummit.org).

Professor Bahaüddin ÇOLAKOĞLU, Dean, Istanbul University , Istanbul Medical Faculty, Bahaüddin Çolakoğlu was born in Hatay in 1953. He began his residency training in Internal Medicine in Erzurum Atatürk University in 1977 after graduating from Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. He became an internal medicine specialist in 1982. He began his academic career as an assistant professor in 1990, and he got the professor degree in 1996. He was appointed as Dean of Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2015. Currently he has been serving as a professor and as the dean of the same Institution.

ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY, ISTANBUL FACULTY OF MEDICINE VICE DEAN

Professor Mustafa Oral ÖNCÜL, Vice Dean, Istanbul University, Istanbul Medical Faculty was born in 1967. In 1990, after graduating from the Faculty of Gulhane Military Medical Academy Gulhane Military Medical University, he began his residency training in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Service in Haydarpasa Training Hospital in Istanbul. He was an Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology specialist in 1997. He began his academic career as an assistant professor in 1999 and he was appointed an associate professor in 2004 and full professor in 2010. He attended to the Observation Program about ‘Transplantation Infections’ in Mayo Clinic in 2012. He retired from the Turkish armed forces and he was appointed as a lecturer to Istanbul Medical Faculty, Department of infectious diseases and clinical Microbiology in 2014. He was appointed as Vice Dean of Istanbul University Istanbul Medical Faculty in June 2015. Currently serving as professor and Vice Dean at the same institution.

Health surveillance for chronic conditions following a disaster

Professor Malcolm Sim BMedSc, MBBS, MSc (Lond), GDipOccHyg, PhD, FAFOEM (RACP), FAFPHM (RACP), FFOM (RCP) is an Occupational and Environmental Health Physician who is Director of the Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He leads a diverse research program investigating the role of workplace and environmental exposures in the development of chronic diseases, such as cancer, respiratory disease, musculoskeletal disorders and psychological impacts. He is a Chief Investigator for several longitudinal cohort studies of workers in a wide range of industries, the Australian Mesothelioma Registry, air pollution studies, the longitudinal study of local residents around a prolonged mine fire in 2014 and the Centre of Research Excellence on health effects from mobile phone use and other sources of electromagnetic energy. He has published over 220 journal articles and book chapters and has been an invited speaker at many international conferences. Prof Sim is the Editor-in-Chief of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and a member of the Editorial Board of the Cochrane Work Review Group. He is an elected Fellow of the Collegium Ramazzini and a Board Member of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH). He led the successful bid to host the ICOH Congress in Melbourne in 2021. Prof Sim has many international collaborations, including being a member of the MODERNET collaboration investigating methods of occupational disease surveillance and the OMEGA-NET collaboration of occupational cohort studies. He has also been involved in several capacity building projects in Asia, including a project to build capability in occupational and environmental epidemiology with the CDC in China and he is also an Adviser on a project to develop better diagnostic criteria in occupational disease diagnosis for the Association of South East Asian Nations. He is the course co-ordinator for the Masters degree in Occupational and Environmental Health at Monash University. Prof Sim has had a number of roles with the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, including being past Director of the occupational physician training program and he recently became the President-elect.

Joachim Seybold studied medicine at Justus Liebig University Gießen, Germany and obtained his MD

in 1996. He worked at the Imperial College in London in lung research before specializing in Internal

Medicine at Charité in 2003.

He also holds an MBA from the University of Bradford (UK, 2004).

Since 2010 he is appointed as the Deputy Medical Director of Charité.

Beyond that, Joachim Seybold coordinates all activities for disaster planning and management at the

Charité.
