BALTIMORE, (September 15, 2023 ~ Safar 30th, 1445 )– A 12-foot-tall puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee girl named "Little Amal" visited Maryland. The Islamic Leadership Institute of America (ILIA) proudly stands alongside Little Amal in a shared mission to uplift and empower refugees, collaborating with the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MIMA). Little Amal, a symbol of hope, has embarked on an extraordinary journey advocating for the rights and needs of refugees, evolving into a march for children's rights.
Since July 2021, Amal has traveled over 6,000 miles to 15 countries, being welcomed by more than a million people on the street, including hundreds of artists, civil society and faith leaders, as well as tens of millions online. Between September 7 and November 5, 2023, Amal traveled 6,000 miles across the United States in one of the largest free public festivals ever created. More than 35 towns and cities from Boston to San Diego and over 1,000 artists and arts organizations will create 100+ events to welcome her.
The goal of Little Amal's visits is to bring people together along with giving marginalized people a voice.
Uplifting and Empowering Refugees:
Amal's arrival in Baltimore highlighted the refugee experience, fostering unity and solidarity. ILIA's contributions were recognized at Baltimore City Hall, in collaboration with MIMA, where they shared insights with the community to discuss Refugees And Islamic Perspectives featuring Mr. Mohamed Arif Wali, a youth representative with a shared refugee experience, and Mr. Ayman Nassar, ILIA’s founder, emphasized the significance of compassion, empathy, and support for refugees within the Islamic context.
ILIA’s Walk with Little Amal emphasizes our mission to empower youth and strive to amplify the voices of refugees, foster unity, and contribute to building a more compassionate and inclusive world. The alignment lies in the joint pursuit of a brighter future for those seeking refuge, echoing the principles of empowerment, justice, and community well-being central to both ILIA's mission and Little Amal's transformative journey.
