In the increasingly interconnected fabric of contemporary society, human identity manifests itself in multiple layers and facets; one of these spheres, becoming ever more relevan in the digital era, is represented by online identity: our digital alter ego, the reflection of us in the virtual world. This parallel reality, shaped by social profiles, avatars, and digital interactions, intertwines more intricately with our real identity, influencing it and sometimes defining it. The distinction between online and offline identity is often less clear-cut than it may seem. Actions, words, and interactions that characterize our digital presence can have a tangible impact on our real life, influencing our relationships, professional opportunities, and even our psychological well-being. The digital world has revolutionized how people express their opinions. While, on the one hand, thanks to the ubiquitous presence of the internet and social media, the people can instantly share their opinions with a vast global audience, significantly amplifying the reach and impact of individual opinions and allowing previously marginalized voices to be heard and influence public discourse; on the other hand, the digital world is also a fertile ground for the spread of misinformation, falsehoods, and propaganda.
The materials used are faux leather and PVC for the balaclava, and plexiglass for the earrings and sunglasses. As the user on the web, all these materials often appear to
be what they are not: real leather and glass.
BALACLAVA
The pixelated pattern, placed over the mouth, part of the body that represents the expression of a message par excellence, depicts the distortion and manipulation through the web of a conveyed concept. A potent symbol of the duality between what is visible and what remains concealed.
SUNGLASSES
Earplugs are commonly used to reduce or block ambient noise, promoting isolation from the surrounding environment. The idea of adding this function to a pair of earrings aims to symbolize the concept of protecting one’s digital identity from external influence, allowing isolation from the constant barrage of information we are continuously bombarded with.
EARRINGS/ EARPLUGS
Through their distinctive morphology,
directly evoking the pixel grid, the distortion experienced by each individual’s image in the digital world is represented. Those wearing the glasses can clearly see who is in front of them, but people in the surrounding area will perceive the user’s gaze in a distorted manner. A similar dynamic often occurs on social networks.
