Meet Your Peer Supporters!

History of TOPS

Mayo High School believes in caring for your mental health!

Teens Offering Peer Support took shape in the Spring semester of 2019, opening up a room for students to come to when they needed a safe place to talk.

In the Fall semester of 2019, TOPS moved into a bigger space in room 2-202, redecorated and opened up its doors for Mayo students to come in all periods of the day! As more peer supporters were added, TOPS expanded its outreach to include mental health awareness activities, such as the Green Bandana Project and special speakers.

When Mayo transitioned to distance learning, TOPS went virtual! We offered virtual appointments for students who needed support, as well as used our Instagram and Twitter pages to help spread the word about mental health awareness.

In the fall of 2021 we got upgraded to a MUCH bigger space in 1-217K! With new furniture, lighting, calming music, fidget toys and art supplies we have been able to serve more Mayo students than ever before! We also hope to continue to provide mental health awareness through special speakers and activities.

TOPS strives to continue growing and remaining a source of mental health support and a place students can find a listening and empathetic ear.

Interested in becoming a Peer Supporter?

In order to becoming a peer supporter, you must fill out an application, interview and receive positive recommendations from your teachers. After being selected, you will receive training on the program and active listening skills.

Applicants must be in (or going into) 10th, 11th or 12th grades and have an open hour, with which to work in the TOPS room. It is also important that applicants be compassionate and empathetic people, good listeners and passionate about mental health.

TOPS is a student-led group, therefore peer supporters are encouraged to brainstorm creative ideas to reach out to the student body to help support and educate about mental health.
