Chess Club

The Chess club has been meeting on Mondays from 3:30-5:00 since the beginning of October in the Mohlke center, room 2-254/2-257 . Coach Roy and the Mayo students have put together one team that will participate in the MN online chess league which meets on alternate Fridays beginning at 3:30 on November 6th.

Not only can you have a great deal of fun as a member of the Chess Club, but you can also learn to think strategically, while improving your brain function, memory, and attention span. All levels of player experience from novice to expert are welcomed. Being in the Chess Club enables you to compete on the team.

Competitions begin in late November. There are approximately six official meets per year. There is also an opportunity to compete in the State Tournament which is held in March. The Mayo Chess Team have been the State Champions twice.

How to join: Students can join by contacting the club through the link below, or you can just come to one of the Monday meetings.

Fund Raisers: The Chess Team members work in several concession stands to be able to cover the costs of the State Tournament.

All levels of chess play/experience is welcome. Every chess master was once a beginner so don't be afraid to take a chance and see what chess club has to offer!

Student Leadership: Positions such as Captain of the Chess Team, President of the Chess Club, Vice-President of Chess Club, and Secretary/Treasurer of the Chess Club are available to anyone who is interested in becoming a leader within the Chess Club community.

Moderator: Mr. Dennis Mays is the faculty advisor, and Roy Truelson is the head coach.
