What's a Newspaper?

A newspaper is a scheduled publication containing news of current events, informative articles, diverse features, and advertising. It is usually printed on low-grade, inexpensive paper such as newsprint.

An online newspaper is the online version of a newspaper, either as a stand-alone publication or as the online version of a printed periodical.

These are categories that are usually included in a newspaper: local news, national news world/international news, editorial(s), sports, classified ads, entertainment, business/ finance.

Requirements:

Create a newspaper showing 1 of the following:

How Odysseus is or is not a hero
How Penelope is the true hero of this epic
Odysseus’ best or worst trait

The newspaper should include the following (see example at the below):

Design a the homepage for an online newspaper using Google Slides, a Google Doc or a graphic website, like Canva.
The homepage must contain at least five categories of a newspaper (listed above) that develop your character’s perspective on the selected topic of the Odyssey.
You will NOT be writing full articles for your online newspaper homepage. You will be creating headlines and short summaries of potential articles. (see samples below)
Online newspapers may have several articles from the same category. EX: 2 articles about National News
Your online newspaper homepage should have a fake Navigation Menu, leading readers to other pages on the website.

Evidence page should include the following:

- - Evidence page includes at least 4 relevant, events, quotes or paraphrases from the text(s) to support details articles feature on the newspaper homepage
  - Evidence goes beyond what was explicitly taught in class
  - All evidence (events, quotes and paraphrases) are accurately cited with page numbers

Before you begin

- Look at the features and sample online newspapers listed below
- Start thinking like your Odyssey character (The tone of the newspaper articles should sound like they would actually be written by your character during the the times of the The Odyssey.)
- Look at the topic you choose (Your picture/video, caption and hashtags should relate to one of the topics below. Your posts should give CLEAR examples of your topic.)

Penelope is the true hero of this epic because. . .
Odysseus’ best trait is _______, and we can learn from him because…
Women were stronger/weaker in ancient Greece than they are today. Explain.
It is better to be loved than feared as a leader (or feared than loved). Explain.

Distinctive Features of Online Newspaper Design

1. Black text on a White Background: It is easier for eyes reading online material.

Colors can be used for headline, buttons and navigation menus.

2. Grid-based Design or Multi-column Layout

Keep it organized and easy for a user to read.

3. Effective Headlines and Headings

Headlines help us to differentiate interesting articles from others. EVERY section should have a headline or Header/Title describing the content. (EX: World News)

3. Easy Navigation

The best location for a Navigation Menu is the top of the website.

3. Maximize White space

White space is considered to be a section where nothing is typed. It is makes your website more readable and simple. Don't fill every square inch with text or images.

3. Limit Images and Graphics

Images and graphics should support an article and draw attention to it, not distract.
