I grew up in Northeast Minneapolis and graduated from DeLaSalle High School. I began my undergraduate degree at Hamline University and finished at the University of Minnesota with a Master of Education and a teaching license in Communication Arts and Literature. My teaching career began at Jefferson High School in 2003. I have taught several courses: TV Production, College Writing, Introduction to Creative Writing, Advanced Creative Writing, Public Speaking, World Mythology, iSearch for Happiness, English 10, English 12, and Teen Literature, as well as English 9, 10, and 12 during summer school. I have periodically worked as a Teaching Consultant for the Minnesota Writing Project. I was Jefferson High School's teacher of the year for 2008-2009, after which I was a semifinalist for the 2009 Minnesota Teacher of the Year. In 2009 I also received a NCTE Teacher of Excellence Award from the Minnesota Council for Teachers of English, where I have served as the Executive Secretary. In 2010, I was honored with the NCTE Media Literacy Award. In my free time I put away the computer to get a breath of fresh air while hiking a State Park or exploring one of the many natural areas in the metro area. I also like to read a lot of books.

Here I am near Teacher's Overlook at Banning State Park.
