In science bowl, 2 teams of 4 players play against each other. Each player holds their own buzzer similar to quiz bowl. The reader asks a "toss up" question and any player may press on their buzzer at any time. That individual player must then answer immediately--without consulting with teammates. If correct, the team gets 4 points. If incorrect, the other team gets 4 points and the reader completes the question for the other team and they get a try to answer.
Correct answers on toss ups also earn the team a related bonus question worth 10 points, for which they can consult for 15 seconds and answer as a team.
Major topics in science bowl include chemistry, physics, biology, earth and space science, energy, math. Sample questions are available here.
Schools can bring multiple teams to the State Tournament. They compete against teams from other schools and sometimes even against teams from their own school. The State Tournament usually consists of close to 17 minute rounds, with 8 minute halves and a break in between. Based on their win-loss record, some teams advance to the playoffs, where a champion is crowned.
The science bowl season begins in October and runs through January, practices are with Mrs. Dreier during second WIN on Thursdays, with 2 scrimmage meets on Friday evenings and the state competition on Saturday, January 23rd.
