Adventure Club

Welcome to Adventure Club! This club is for 7th and 8th grade students at Indian River Middle School who enjoy the outdoors and are ready to experience Northern New York in every season! Adventure Club was started in 2015 at the Middle School- the advisors for 2017-2018 are Ms. Call and Mr. Goloski. Mission statement

The purpose of Indian River Middle School Adventure Club is to

      • help students experience the outdoors in a safe and positive environment
      • provide opportunities for students to develop confidence, self reliance, teamwork, and leadership capabilities
      • increase student understanding of Leave No Trace (LNT) outdoor ethics and behaviors


Club information

    • This club is meant to help students gain experience outdoors and is open to all eligible students (see below).
    • We meet after school prior to an outing to prepare for a successful hike. Hands on activities and interactive learning experiences cover topics such as trip planning, Leave No Trace outdoor ethics, safety procedures, and teamwork skills.
    • There are four outings spread out over the school year.
    • There is a lending closet of extra equipment available for students if needed- it is not necessary to spend a lot of money on equipment for students to participate in Adventure Club.


Eligibility

    • Students must be in 7th or 8th grade
    • Return completed medical form and overall permission slip
    • Return outing specific permission slip
    • No discipline write ups in current school year ***See Ms. Call or Mr. Goloski if this is an issue
    • Receiving a passing grade in all classes


Meetings

    • Students meet after school 2-4 times before the outing depending on the trip.
    • The last after school meeting before a trip is Gear Shakedown- students need to bring their backpack ready for the outing to school and we will go through the contents together to ensure preparedness from all participants
    • Students who have sports or other after school conflicts can still participate- please see Ms. Call or Mr. Goloski


Permission slips

    • There is one medical form and overall permission slip to participate in Adventure Club
    • There is a separate trip-specific permission slip for each outing. This is done to ensure open communication with parents about every individual trip.
