A Message from Superintendent Decker

Dear Parents, Guardians, Staff, and IRCSD Community,

School is off to a great start in many ways, and the hustle-and-bustle of the school year can be felt in all parts of the district. Given where we were a year ago in terms of hybrid programming, it’s great to have our students and staff back full time. School opening always brings challenges, and this year is no different. Even so, IR is working to keep students and staff safe and healthy, and we are proud to have our students learning with us every day. It’s amazing how much our students are learning already! Here are a few updates from around the district:

Transportation: As many have experienced, Indian River and all schools are facing serious challenges with transportation issues, mostly centered around driver availability. Our drivers and transportation staff have been amazing, but when life happens and we must combine routes or create double pickup runs, things slow down. We appreciate the patience and flexibility shown by students, parents, and our teachers… and certainly appreciate our hard-working drivers.

Masking: Our students are doing a fantastic job with consistent, proper mask use. Thank you! It is important to note that students (and staff) who are wearing masks properly throughout the day are less likely to be subject to quarantines. This helps us keep everyone healthy AND in school. Again, thank you!

Health Screenings: Please continue to conduct health screenings at home each morning. Anyone with any symptoms of COVID-19 should stay home, call your healthcare provider, and will need to get tested for COVID-19 before returning to school. Feel free to contact our school nurses for more information. Thank you!

COVID Reporting: This year, schools will submit positive COVID case numbers to the NYS Health Dashboard ( rather than direct daily letters to the community. This is always a tough balance with competing privacy rights, so we appreciate your patience. IRCSD will also tabulate totals via a chart showing a summary of cases on the COVID-19 section of our website. As an update—since the first day of school, IRCSD has experienced 21 positive COVID cases (as per Jefferson County Public Health). This is 0.58% of our total school population. As always, Jefferson County Public Health manages any related contract tracing. Again, please visit our website or the link above for updated case numbers.

Employment Opportunities: We are always looking for new IRCSD team members! If you are interested in exploring full- or part-time employment opportunities including substitute roles (teacher/support staff), bus driver (FirstStudent), or any position, please contact us at or visit our website.

In closing, thank you for your contributions throughout the first weeks of school, and a special thank you for the support shown for anyone struggling throughout our community. As I walked the hallways of our schools this morning, the number of students and staff wearing red in support of a local teen injured over the weekend shows how deeply we all care for the health and safety of others. This makes me so proud of our Warrior family! Yes, these may be tough times for everyone, yet together, we can overcome any challenge.

In all we do, please stay safe, stay healthy, and remain #WarriorStrong.

With deep respect and appreciation,

Troy Decker
