Norma Sancir is a community journalist, social communicator, and human rights defender of the Ch'orti people in Chiquimula, Guatemala.
The Mayan Ch'orti' Council of Olopa, Chiquimula, face threats and violations of their territorial, environmental and cultural rights due to mining extraction projects.
In 2014, Norma Sancir was arbitrarily detained while covering police action during a demonstration by the Ch'orti' people.
She is a defender of freedom of the press and expression and the rights of indigenous peoples.
