I am AkpoBari Celestine Nkabari, an Ogoni-born Human/Environmental Rights Campaigner and National Coordinator of Ogoni Solidarity forum-Nigeria. Ogoni is the home of the late Environmental rights Campaigner Ken Saro-Wiwa, a place polluted and devastated by Shell Petroleum Development Company for over five decades. The company operated in Ogoniland. I started activism as a trade union activist on an oil palm plantation after I led around 4000 casual workers in a protest that resulted in the sacking of 25 management staff that were oppressing poor workers. I joined the mainstream human rights community to continue the Ogoni struggle that Ken Saro-Wiwa started. After the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others on November 10, 1995, we have continued to resist the forceful resumption of oil operations by the federal government of Nigeria and the IOCs.
