The Department of Psychology, Indraprastha College for Women is lauded as one of the finest departments of the college and holds a very prestigious position amongst the various departments of Psychology across University of Delhi.

The first faculty member in the Department of Psychology was Ms. Nirmala Sherjung in the year 1960.  Ms. Preeti Johri and Dr. Prem Kapoor were amongst the first few members of the department, later joined by Dr. Sudesh Bal in 1965. Dr. Aruna Broota and Dr. Veena Rewal, the alumnae of the first batch joined the Department as faculty in 1966. The first batch of eight students was awarded the B.A. (Hons.) Psychology degree in 1963.

The department today comprises 16 dedicated faculty members and nearly 230 brilliant students who are committed to both the academic and extra-curricular activities of the department. The department is known for producing University toppers and students who excel both professionally and personally. Indeed, many of the department’s alumnae have made their mark in the fields of counselling, education and research, human resource development, social work and civil services.

The Department has state-of-art infrastructure comprising four spacious and well-equipped labs (Lab I, Lab II and Lab III). The fourth lab is a Computer lab, which facilitates the students to conduct experiments and tests using computers. The labs are fully equipped with the latest materials that enable the students to conduct new and innovative experiments and tests in the field of psychology. The department boasts of an archival section that houses several old equipment that trace the history of the development of the discipline of psychology. The department also has a small in-house library with texts frequently used by the students. 

The department has an active academic society, the Psychology Association, comprising of democratically elected student representatives who function under the guidance of a faculty advisor. The aim of the association is to create opportunities for learning, growth, development and exploration for students beyond the classroom. It also aims at creating spaces for cultural activities and recreational programs for the students.

The Department of Psychology at Indraprastha College for Women focuses on providing students with a solid theoretical learning base, integrated with a strong impetus for developing practical skills. The curriculum allows for a close engagement and an examination of professional ethics, gender and human values within the sociocultural realities. With the right balance of theoretical and practical learning, the student is equipped with skills to navigate both professional and personal spaces in line with the vision of NEP. Students are encouraged to engage in independent conferences, seminars, workshops, special lectures etc. with eminent resource persons and subject matter experts. The department provides a platform for scholarly research activities in the form of research paper presentations, research colloquiums, and academic meets. Creative expression of students is promoted through the Annual Departmental Magazine, Udaan.

Members of the faculty are enthusiastic subject experts who have a passion for teaching and who value and seek continuous professional development. They offer a wealth of expertise in a wide variety of areas such as Cognitive Psychology, Psychological Testing and Assessment, Statistical Methods in Research, Theoretical Systems and Trends in Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Neuropsychology, Research Methods, Experimental Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Gender and Sexuality, Organizational Behavior, Gerontology, Social Psychology and Media Psychology. The faculty are also accomplished researchers with numerous publications in journals of national and international repute, and have actively contributed to academia through participation in conferences and seminars. The faculty also strives to use a set of highly effective pedagogical techniques to enhance the rigour and relevance of the curriculum. 

The Department takes pride in its graduate students who not only demonstrate comprehensive disciplinary knowledge but also critical thinking, scientific temperament, and a deep sense of social responsibility and commitment toward nation building.
