Activities help students become familiar with common organisms found in a pond and discover their importance in a balanced aquatic habitat as they create food webs. Students also investigate how an environmental change (pollution, disease, introduction of exotic species, etc.) affects a pond habitat, and do a simulation to model results on invertebrate sampling and discuss implications of "sampling" results.

The Monarchs on the Move Challenge is a part of the 4-H Ag Innovators Experience (4-H AIE), an annual program that challenges young people to apply critical thinking and STEM skills to a real-world agriculture challenge. Youth use modeling to understand the declining population of the monarch butterfly and the important relationship between the agricultural landscape and biodiversity to enhance habitat for a sustainable population.
Citizen scientists can report sightings each fall and spring as the monarchs travel to and from Mexico and track migration on real-time maps.
