Dr Sean Caroll with prints from the Listen, Scoundrels! exhibition at De Montfort University, November 2025.
The Computer Arts Archive CIC is very happy to announce that Sean Carroll has successfully defended his PhD at his recent viva.. Sean has been working with the Computer Arts Archive for several years as part of his research programme at De Montfort University in Leicester, looking at how Artificial Intelligence (AI) will impact archiving and the use of archives.
Sean curated a series of exhibitions as part of his research. Including the New Generations programme in 2023/2024 at the LCB Depo in Leicester, during which four artists made use of the Computer Arts Archive to help them develop new artworks. He also produced Listen, Scoundrels! for the Computer Arts Society (CAS), where he used AI tools to "co-curate" an exhibition looking at the radical early history of CAS. This exhibition has so far been shown in London, Leicester and Glasgow.
Dr Carroll is now finishing some minor amendments to his thesis and will then be looking for post-doctoral opportunities. He is also working on the next Computala exhibition at LCB Depot, happening in January 2026. Information about this can be found on the New Media Artclub website.
If you want to know more about Sean's research, then you can get in touch with him by email mat hi@newmediaart.club. His thesis will be published on De Montfort University's DORA website when his amendments are complete.
