The Dashboard is the first thing users see when they log into Canvas. It helps users know what is happening in all of their current courses. There are two default views of the Dashboard that may be set, Card View or Recent Activity. The Dashboard also includes a To Do List that helps with organization and quickly links to course content. The Calendar and Canvas Inbox are also available from the Global Navigation on the Dashboard. The Calendar is where users can see all courses assignments and events in one place. The Canvas Inbox is the messaging tool used instead of email to communicate with students. Users can communicate with other people in the course at any time.
Think of Canvas Modules as your student-facing organizational structure. How do you want to organize your content for your students? By weeks? By units of study? By topics? You can decide what works for your course! Modules help you control what students can see by choosing what is published or unpublished and the order for how you want students to engage with your content. You can build new content directly in Modules or add existing content you've already made. Modules can house Pages, Assignments, Quizzes, Discussions, links, and more!
Modules benefit students as well. Modules reduce clicks for students. Once a student enters a content item in a module they can progress, like flipping the pages of the textbook, from an assignment to a discussion to an app just by selecting 'Next'.
Pages are a great way to add content to Canvas. You can start by building a home page for your course! Any time you want to create content in Canvas you will find a Rich Content Editor (RCE). The RCE appears as you build Content Pages, Assignment directions, Quiz directions and questions, Discussion questions, and Announcements. Your students will have RCEs when they submit assignments with a Textbox, answer questions in Short Answer Quiz Responses, post responses to Discussion groups, etc.
