The contemporary theatre map of a city has several layers. Along with the historical auditoria there are more modern venues, located in areas that seek to occupy a central position. The more monumental and spectacular buildings coexist, for example, with humble theatres of arts centres and associations, or with fringe theatres located around the neighbourhoods, the refuge of the scenic and cultural avant-garde. Taking this approach, the exhibition provides a concise comparative insight into the theatre site in Barcelona and Madrid. The underlying hypothesis considers that the evolution of the theatre map of a city follows its history.
Thus, the panorama outlined begins by providing a wide shot of the city as a whole, then zooms in on the areas in which the performing arts have been and sometimes still are the leading characters of urban life, and finally enters some of the venues that are home to theatre activity. The maps displayed show both a synchronic and diachronic image of the theatre systems in Barcelona and Madrid. The photographs of the venues, always taken from the same vantage point, portray a broad heterogeneous landscape, in which a wide range of scenic events take place.
