“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” —Mahatma Gandhi
Dear Parents/Carers,
We hope you had a lovely week. Thank you to parents who have been able to come along to the 'Meet the Teacher' sessions over the past couple of weeks. If you have any further questions, please speak to your child's class teacher.
On Tuesday, Year 4 commenced their science experiment where they were investigating what makes materials change state. The children chose chocolate to investigate - as you can imagine, they thoroughly enjoyed this! In the afternoon, Year 2 and 3 had engaging PE lessons. Blackbirds and Robins were developing their throwing and catching skills, whilst Year 3 explored their balancing through a gymnastics lesson.
On Wednesday, the children in Reception were continuing to work on writing their name. The children used name labels to support them when forming the individual letters. In addition to this, they made the initial letter of their name out of salt dough. In the afternoon on Wednesday, Jays and Swans developed their science and maths skills. They did this through creating bar charts to represent gestation periods of a variety of animals.
On Thursday, Jays were working on their touch typing skills. They had to ensure they placed their fingers on the correct keys to ensure they were accurate. The children found this challenging, but applied much resilience to the task! Year 1 were learning about adjectives, verbs and nouns this week in English lessons through their core text, The Lonely Beast. The children have enjoyed learning about this book a lot so far this term. We can not wait to read through their final outcomes at the end of the term!
Today Year 3 had 'Reading with your Child' afternoon. It was wonderful to see so many parents attend this event! Thank you for your continued support - the children love sharing their classroom with you.
Finally, we would like to take the opportunity to thank all Year 6 children for their efforts and preparation for Head Pupil interviews. The children worked extremely hard when writing their letter applications for the role of Prefect and Head Pupil.
The interviews took place on Thursday 22nd September and the following roles were given:
Head Boy - Fletcher M
Head Girl - Jessie G
Deputy Head Boy - Justin K
Deputy Head Girl - Maisie C
Sports Ambassador - Teddy D
Sports Ambassador - Millie B
Congratulations to these children and all of the other children who are now proud Prefects of Maundene! We can not wait to work alongside our new Year 6 leaders to continue developing Maundene even further.
We hope you have a great weekend,
Miss Capes, Mrs Jackson and the Maundene Team

Nine Protected Characteristics
Race - What is race discrimination?
This is when you are treated differently because of your race in one of the situations covered by the Equality Act.
What the Equality Act says about race discrimination
The Equality Act 2010 says you must not be discriminated against because of your race.
In the Equality Act, race can mean your colour, or your nationality (including your citizenship). It can also mean your ethnic or national origins, which may not be the same as your current nationality.
Different types of race discrimination
There are four main types of race discrimination.
This happens when someone treats you worse than another person in a similar situation because of your race.
This happens when an organisation has a particular policy or way of working that puts people of your racial group at a disadvantage.
Harassment occurs when someone makes you feel humiliated, offended or degraded.
This is when you are treated badly because you have made a complaint of race related discrimination under the Equality Act. It can also occur if you are supporting someone who has made a complaint of race related discrimination.

Oracy
At Maundene, we believe that Oracy is fundamental to the learning process and children's development.
Oracy is our ability to communicate effectively using spoken language. It is the ability to speak eloquently, articulate ideas and thoughts, influence through talking, listen to others and have the confidence to express your views. These are all skills that support success in both learning and life beyond school.
Therefore, we have decided that we are going to add an Oracy task in our weekly newsletter. This is an optional activity but it is being provided to encourage you and your child to discuss an image, scenario, quote or video each week. The four different strands of Oracy are provided below with key skills for your children to focus on when they are participating in a discussion with you at home.

Animals
Which animal is your favourite?
Why is this particular animal your favourite?
What do you like about it?
Can you describe your favourite animal to a member of your family?

I know this because…
