"Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow." - Helen Keller
Dear Parents/Carers,
On Monday, Year 3 had a very exciting English lesson focusing on direct speech. They practically constructed direct speech sentences into sandwiches! The children were extremely engaged during this activity and then applied it to their writing the day after.
Doves and Kingfishers enjoyed talking about the changes in the seasons. They made woodland trees and then chose to add autumnal coloured leaves to them. The children discussed the different coloured paints they could use and created leaves on their trees by using their fingers. This piece of art provoked great discussion between the children about the seasons and changes.
On Wednesday, it was celebration assembly. Well done to all the children who achieved their Star of the Week certificates and their Times Table Rockstar certificates. Keep working hard!
On Thursday, The Maundene Choir attended Young Voices at the 02 Arena. The children had the most incredible time singing their hearts out and holding up their posters that they made! They even got to listen to and sing with Heather Small. Thank you to so many parents and carers for their support and for the adults who supported in the planning of the trip and who attended the 02 - without you, it wouldn't have happened!
At school on Thursday, Eagles enjoyed learning some badminton skills and then put them into action by playing mini games. Falcons class worked on their ball control in outdoor PE. The children dribbled the ball and passed the ball to one another, focusing on stopping the ball using the inside edge of their foot. In the afternoon, Year 4 focused on experimenting with different materials to create the Northern Lights. They started by analysing the colours before taking oil pastels and water colour to recreate their own piece. In addition to this, Year 2 were really interested in learning about The United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child in their curriculum lesson. They discussed each right and ordered them in regards to which ones they felt were most important.
Today, Kestrels had their class assembly. The children showcased their learning to their parents. The children should feel so proud of themselves as they were so confident when presenting their learning and speaking in front of an audience. Well done Kestrels! In the afternoon, Year 4 had reading with their child where parents were invited into the classroom to read with their children. Thank you to so many parents who attended, it means so much to the children.
Our Junior Leadership team this week conducted a book look, which focused on presentation. We are so proud of the children for discussing and reflecting on their own presentation and for giving one another constructive criticism. You are a credit to Maundene!
We hope you have a lovely weekend,
Miss Capes, Mrs Jackson and the Maundene Team

Bookmarks
Milo and Skippy bookmarks will be available to purchase via Arbor. They will be £1 each and a great addition to a child's reading book! Once the book marks have arrived and payment is made on Arbor, they will be given straight to the children that have purchased them. The payment item can be found under Activities - Trips.
NSPCC Number Day
We are delighted to be supporting the NSPCC by taking part in Number Day on Friday 3rd February 2023.
We will be working to solve exciting maths puzzles in our classes, against the clock with Buddy, the Speak out, Stay safe mascot. We will also be completing a range of fun and engaging maths activities and games throughout the day.
Children in KS2 will be involved in a friendly competition throughout the day involving schools across the United Kingdom on Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS).
As part of Number Day, we will be competing in ‘Dress up for Digits’ to raise funds, a contribution of £1, for the NSPCC, a charity that helps support children across the United Kingdom. We ask that you bring your donation in to be collected by the class teacher on the day. Pupils can wear an item of clothing with a number on it (football shirt, cap, netball shirt or even a onesie) or get more creative by dressing up in a maths or numbers theme.
We are really looking forward to all the fun of Number Day and look forward to seeing the children’s attire and getting stuck into all the activities we have planned. All the money we raise at Maundene will make an enormous difference to children today and help the NSPCC be there for children tomorrow.
