Delce news from the Headteacher

Dear Parents and Carers

This week, I'd like to express my sincere appreciation to our fantastic children. Their commitment to learning and their eagerness to put their knowledge and skills into practice during recent assessment weeks has been truly inspiring and their enthusiasm is infectious. Keep up the excellent work, children (and teachers)!

I'm delighted to share that our Year 5s whole class reading learning, of The London Eye Mystery, has been recognised by the Siobhan Dowd Trust for their achievement! Over 1.1K viewers have seen the incredible learning outcomes from Rhodes, Dickens and Goulding class.

Where would we be without the kindness of our volunteers? A huge thank you goes to the PTA for organising the wonderful MANGO (Mother's Day) event. The children absolutely loved it! I'm sure it brought smiles to many faces. You can find pictures of the event on our X page (Twitter).

Speaking of online safety, with Mother's Day often involving online communication, I encourage you to take a look at the internet safety section. It offers helpful tips and advice on managing screen time, discussing social media apps with your children, and fostering responsible online behaviour.

Remember, our school prioritises active learning experiences. We get the children moving and engaged in various ways, from inspiring art activities to PE sessions. To see more examples, please visit our X page (Twitter).

Finally, we continue to educate our children on the importance of kindness and inclusivity. We discuss what racism and discrimination is, and how our words and actions can impact others. We encourage them to treat everyone with respect and celebrate the diversity of our school community. Discrimination will not be tolerated at Delce Academy.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to another successful week!

Miss Stevens

'At Delce We Do Belong'

Our Core Value this term: PERSEVERANCE

It Couldn’t Be Done

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,

But he with a chuckle replied

That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one

Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.

So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin

On his face. If he worried he hid it.

He started to sing as he tackled the thing

That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;

At least no one ever has done it;”

But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,

And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.

With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,

Without any doubting or quiddit,

He started to sing as he tackled the thing

That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,

There are thousands to prophesy failure;

There are thousands to point out to you one by one,

The dangers that wait to assail you.

But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,

Just take off your coat and go to it;

Just start to sing as you tackle the thing

That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

Edgar A. Guest

To promote our core value of PERSEVERANCE, we would like to invite our Delce family to read a story together at home.

This week’s recommendation is: Scarlett.

Scarlett

It is a powerful short animation that tells the inspiring story of a young girl named Scarlett overcoming the challenges of amputation after battling Ewing Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. We witness Scarlett's emotional and physical struggles as she grapples with her new reality. However, with unwavering support from her mother, Scarlett discovers the strength and resilience within herself to adapt and continue pursuing her dreams. Her journey beautifully embodies the spirit of perseverance and the power to overcome even the most difficult obstacles. This animation serves as a poignant reminder that life throws curveballs, but through determination and support, we can rise above and achieve our goals.

You can also sing along at home with our Perseverance song

Inventors

This week, we have worked in our Kagon 4's to sketch designs for our 3D train that we are going to be creating as part of our DT.

Year 3

This week in year, 3 the children have been working on their coding this week. They created commands for magicians using timers.

Year 4

This week in Year 4, we have enjoyed creating our backgrounds for our John Dyer inspired artwork.

We have also used ambitious vocabulary and a range of sentence stems to create a diary extract, in the view of an explorer.

Year 5

Bonjour!
This week, Year 5 have enhanced their French knowledge by describing their pets with their names. They have learnt how to respond to the question 'As-tu un animal?' They showed amazing engagement and perseverance.

Year 6

A big round of applause for Year 6!

We'd like to give a huge shout-out to our fantastic Year 6 children! This past week was assessment week, and they tackled each challenge with incredible perseverance and hard work. Their dedication and positive attitude truly shone through.

DEC

Jackson class threaded a needle and started a running stitch on their natural colours, leaf printed pattern cushions. They were inspired by textile artist Caroline Bell. The children demonstrated amazing perseverance.

Uniform

Lost Property at Delce Academy

It is inevitable that school uniform items are mislaid or mixed up.  The best way to ensure that your child’s belongings are not lost is to ensure all items of school uniform are clearly named in permanent ink. Wherever possible, named lost property will be returned to your child’s class.

Any items that are found and are unnamed, will be kept in two large crates. You will find them near the main office.

Please help us in reuniting lost property with its owner by labelling all of your child's property in permanent ink - this includes shoes, lunchboxes and water bottles.

If your child has lost any part of their uniform and it has been labelled, please encourage them to look in their classroom, corridor and playground in the first instance.  If it still cannot be found, please check the lost property crates.

Claiming Lost Property Procedures:

Children:

Look first: In the classroom, corridor and playground.

Visit the office: Children wishing to claim lost property must visit the office  during school hours.

Supervision: Office staff will supervise children as they search the Lost Property Crates for their belongings.

Parents:

Contact the office: Parents who suspect their child has lost an item can contact the office after their child has looked in their classroom, corridor and playground.

Supervision: Office staff will monitor as the parents search the Lost Property Crates for their children’s belongings.

JLT Weekly Sort:

Wednesdays: JLT members will dedicate time on Wednesdays during lunchtime to sort and tidy the Lost Property Crates and return any labelled items.

Enrichment
A message from Mr Minlah...

Our tennis-based sports sessions are thriving! Combining the fun of the sport with learning new skills, this program helps children develop:

These sessions are fully funded and delivered by Jim Barton who runs a company called Jimmy's Tennis.

Our Clay Club is also seeing great success! Children are enjoying themselves and learning new skills in a supportive environment.

We look forward to another exciting week!

Family and Community Information

What a Book Fairytale!

This week, our school was transformed into a literary wonderland with the arrival of the Book Fair! It was a joy to see our children and their families browsing the shelves, discovering new favourites, and getting lost in the world of stories.

We want to thank everyone who visited and helped make the Book Fair a success!

Ramadan 2024

As we approach the start of Ramadan on Monday 11th March, we acknowledge that some pupils may be taking part in fasting. If this is the case for your child/ren, please ensure you notify the school of this. This is to ensure we have accurate details provided by parents and carers and so that staff can be aware of pupils who are fasting.

We appreciate this is a very significant and special time of the year for our Muslim community.

There will be a designated space for your child to pray if they wish to.

We are happy to support the children and accommodate where necessary.

Year 5 Earns Recognition from Siobhan Dowd Trust!

We're delighted to share that our Year 5s reading of The London Eye Mystery has been recognised by the Siobhan Dowd Trust for their achievement!

Their dedication and hard work truly deserve this well-earned recognition.

The Siobhan Dowd Trust is a small charity set up with the stated aim of ‘bringing books to the children who need them most’. The charity was established by the author Siobhan Dowd, who died in April 2007, aged just 47. In her final days, Siobhan set up this trust to use the proceeds of her work to fund reading projects for children.

To learn more about the Siobhan Dowd Trust and Year 5's achievement, please visit our X page.

Congratulations, Year 5! We're incredibly proud of you!

SEND

A message from our SENCO, Mr Palmer...

Mr. Palmer's Parent Drop Ins

Each week Mr. Palmer will be available 9am-10am every Friday in 15 minute slots to discuss any concerns.

If you would like one of the 15 Minute Slots to discuss something, please use the QR code below to access the booking system.

Mr Palmer's Top Tip this week!

Does your child struggle to regulate their emotions? Does this cause you to struggle to regulate your emotions?

Make sure you take time to regulate yourself and put yourself in a "green zone" before supporting the child. An adult who is unregulated will not support a child as well as a parent who is regulated.

Online Safety

Parental monitoring apps
In today's digital world, children are constantly bombarded with online trends and fashions. While many are positive, some can unfortunately promote unkindness and even discriminatory behaviours.

As responsible parents, monitoring the children's online activity is crucial.

This doesn't mean constant intrusion, but rather staying informed and being present in their digital lives.

There are several free apps that can help parents navigate this responsibility effectively. These tools provide insights into your children's online activities and can help set healthy boundaries, fostering safe and positive online experiences for your children.

UK Chief Medical Officers' screen time recommendations:

No screen time for under-2s.

Less than 1 hour per day for 2-5 year olds.

Maximum of 2 hours per day for 5-12 year olds.

Tips for setting screen time limits:

Create a family media plan.

Use parental controls and timers.

Designate screen-free zones and times.

Offer alternative activities.

Birthdays

Wishing these children a Happy Birthday for birthdays over the coming week!
