Water Smart Choices for Arid Agriculture
Teachers can either show this pre-recorded presentation outlining the different water sources, usages and factors contributing to issues of regional water supply (click the video), or can use this self-paced, interactive (with polls and quizzes) presentation (click the link).
*Note that teachers will need to add the 'Slido' Chrome Extension to their Google account in order to activate interactive quiz and polls in the self-paced presentation.
Show what you've learned!
Students will work in groups as problem solvers to address local crop/water issues. Students should articulate their rationale for choosing specific crops, and explain the watering methodology they selected for their given scenario.
Elaborate your knowledge!
Teachers are encouraged to lead their students in discussion regarding local water needs and issues faced by farmers, industry and the general public (municipal water). Students should consider the importance of water in a water scarce region like El Paso, and ideas of how stakeholders can work together to ensure water for future generations.
Students can also research how farmers in other regions adjust their crop choices and watering methods based on their local environment and compare to those here in the El Paso region.
Conclusion/Review
After completing this workshop, students should have a better understanding where water is obtained and used regionally, and the impacts on water supply due to demand and changes in climate. Students will have gained a better sense of tactics and water smart choices local farmers employ for agriculture and how these choices relate to conservation, wastewater management and water policies.
