Welcome the Indianola High School Jazz Band Page!
Indianola High School has 2 Jazz Bands and Jazz Combos. Jazz students music must be enrolled in the high school band (sometimes there are special exceptions for bass, guitar and piano if there is a need). Audition materials will be available shortly after the school year starts. Auditions consist of playing a jazz standard head tune with at least one chorus of improvisation, chromatic scale (full range of the instrument) and any previously known major scales. All jazz bands perform at the Fall Showcase Concert, SCIBA Jazz Festival, IHSMA State Jazz Festival, SE Polk JAzz Festival, Paul McKee Jazz Festival (at IHS), District Jazz Night, and the Ballard Jazz Festival. Additionally, Jazz 1 performs at Noce in downtown Des Moines, the Norwalk/Indianola Jazz Merger Concert and does a tour of the elementary schools.

Jazz 1 is under the direction of Mr. Swanson. Jazz 1 rehearses Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday mornings at 7 AM once marching band is over. Jazz 1 occasionally rehearses on Tuesday evenings during jazz season.
