The XMM-Newton Heritage Program WISSHFUL (P.I. G. Lanzuisi) focuses on the study of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN)-driven winds and their impact on the co-evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBH) and their host galaxies. These multi-phase and multi-scale winds, particularly Ultra-fast Outflows (UFOs, with v_out>0.1c), play a crucial role in regulating star formation and SMBH growth by removing or heating the cold gas in the host galaxy. The program aims to systematically search for and characterize UFO features in a large sample of high-luminosity, high-redshift quasars (QSOs) to understand their physical properties and energetics.
The WISSHFUL quasar sample is selected from the larger WISSH (WISE/SDSS-selected hyper-luminous) quasar sample. WISSH quasars are selected based on their extreme IR luminosity. By examining multi-wavelength data, including infrared, optical, and X-ray observations, the project investigates the physical properties of quasars, their environments, and the mechanisms driving AGN feedback. This comprehensive approach provides insights into the co-evolution of galaxies and their central black holes during the peak epoch of galaxy formation.
