Barcelona is a major tourist destination and busy throughout the year. If you haven't done, it is recommended to book your hotel before it is too late. To help you decide your hotel, here's some information of the workshop venue and public transport.
We'll have the workshop in the Chemistry/Physics faculty building of University de Barcelona at the western edge of Barcelona (a few 100 m from FC Barcelona's Camp Nou). Don't confuse with the historic university building located in the city centre. The faculty building is in the area called 'Zona Universitaria' and right next to the metro station, Palau Reial, of the Green line (L3). You can reach from the central point of the city, Plaça de Catalunya in 20+ min by metro. As there are more options for restaurants, bars, shops and tourist sites, it is probably better to stay in the city centre area. If you stay near the metro L3 line, commuting is straightforward. The historic city area (Ciutat Vella: El Gótic and El Born) could be nice but you should be wary of overwhelming number of tourists. There are also some dodgy areas that are better to avoid. In general, the area called Eixample, where you can recognise the clear grid design on the map, is a safe bet. If you are not bothered with one change of train, other metro lines, L1 (red), L2 (purple), L5 (blue), all connect with L3, and there are more options for hotels near those metro lines. Commuting should be reasonable if you stay in Eixample not far beyond Passeig de Sant Joan. Alternatively, there are a few buses going to Palau Reial, if you stay near the big street, Avinguda Diagonal, which literally runs diagonally across the Eixample and the city.
