Lesson Ideas
Blackout Poetry - Black out all of the words on a page except select words/phrases to create poem. Can use pages from weeded books.
Doggie Haiku - Read Dogku by Andrew Clements
Write down a bunch of different words from all the parts of speech and put them in the envelopes at the bottom of the board with a little bucket of push pins. Students create messages, poems, etc. with the words and pin them up!
Paint chip Poetry - write a line about the color on each shade
Concrete Poem - Write a poem in the shape of an animal or object
Opposites Attract - think outside the box and find the one similarity between even the most polar of opposites. The beginning and end of the poem focus solely on one topic (in this case: the ocean and the desert). The middle line of the poem highlights the one similarity between the pair and acts as a transition (in this case: sand).
Acrostic Poem
Poetry Doodle Table - Write a prompt on it with a marker. “Write a poem about an animal.” Add related poetry books and markers for your students. Stand back and watch the students’ creativity take over.
Extras
