PSYC 340/341 Cunningham Children's Home Service Learning Program

service learning opportunity

Are you interested in volunteering at a local service provider with various levels of support programs and have some experiences with children, adolescents, and adults while applying principles of psychology in clinical/community settings?

This service-learning opportunity is a two-semester (year-long) volunteer experience & seminar for advanced undergraduate students at Cunningham Children’s Home. Students will be selected through a competitive application process. Matching CCH program sites is based on students’ schedule availability, interests, and skills which could include some evenings and weekends. This includes a 10-hour commitment to be on-site at CCH and enrollment in the 4-credit PSYC 340/341 course during the Fall & Spring semesters. The course is a 2-hour weekly seminar to supplement growth as volunteers which includes course work.

Students participating in the service-learning program will have some opportunity to work with children, adolescents, and adults who’ve experienced early-life adversities in a variety of settings.

In addition, the course is meant to compliment and reinforce students’ experiential learning at CCH and requires students to integrate what they have learned in the course with their observations at the agency. The seminar surveys a variety of topics relevant to students’ work at CCH including mental health disorders, impacts of trauma, evidence-based assessment and treatment, and ecological factors that influence childhood development.
