About ICEHE 2023
Professor Dr. Noor Lide Abu Kassim
Conference Chair
Education has been largely directed by what happens within the four walls of the classroom in terms of curriculum, instruction and learning materials. While the education system, structure, and subjects are determined by governments and designated ministries. Education is also very much present in refugee camps and war-torn areas mainly in the form of “alternative education”. These alternative schools are mainly supported by sponsors or non-governmental organisations (NGOs). And what gets taught and how the teaching and learning take place depends on the limited training the teachers have received, the limited resources available and the internal policies of respective governments.
More often than not, children who are displaced because of war and stricken by poverty are given a glimpse of hope to acquire knowledge and skills due to the concerted efforts of NGOs. These children are often denied access to government schools, which are usually free or highly subsidized. Private schools, on the other hand, are just beyond their reach, financially. Hence, whatever hope for education they may have rests on what can be provided by NGOs. Yet, the efforts of these NGOs often go unnoticed by those involved in the delivery of formal education. And equally unfortunate is that these are rarely addressed in education conferences.
As an institution that advocates Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin and humanising education, it is only fitting that the IIUM lead the way in redirecting what education should be, its role and purpose for the well-being and survival of the mankind and humanity. By supporting the education provided by NGOs, quality education can be accessible to all. This conference seeks to redefine and transform education by bringing into the mainstream dialogues on the “renewed” role of schooling and higher education, acceptance of alternative education, roles of NGOs in providing quality education, breaking down barriers and addressing challenges for equitable society, global sustainability and rahmatan lil ‘alamin. This includes innovative and collaborative pedagogies and assessments, professional development, structural and systemic changes in policy and practice, cross-cultural and multicultural issues, inclusive instruction, and values-based education.
