Prof. B Umashankar

Welcome to my website! This is Umashankar Balunaini, a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Hyderabad. My specialization lies in Geotechnical Engineering, with research interests spanning reinforced earth structures, soil-structure interaction, foundation engineering, ground improvement techniques, recyclable materials in geotechnics, geosynthetics in pavements, in situ seismic characterization of coal ash pond deposits, and AI/ML applications in geotechnical engineering.

Over the past three years, my innovative research at IIT Hyderabad has translated laboratory findings into practical field applications. My work on geosynthetic-stabilized pavement materials, some findings are now integral to Indian Road Congress provisions, revolutionizes road construction. Additionally, research on recyclable materials offers sustainable alternatives and addresses environmental concerns. My research vision includes automating seepage detection in earthen dams, reflecting my commitment to societal and environmental challenges. As an empaneled expert and advisor to many government organizations and PSUs, my influence extends beyond academia, shaping real-world engineering practices.

As an educator, I am dedicated to inspiring and guiding the next generation of geotechnical engineers. I aim to create a stimulating learning environment where students can build a strong foundation in the subject matter and acquire the skills needed to excel in their careers.
