SANJAY KUMAWAT

Ph.D.  (Structural Engineering, 2020-present)

Prime Minister Research Fellow

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay

Born in Rajasthan and brought up in Maharashtra, I am Sanjay Kumawat living in the metropolitan region of Mumbai, Thane. I belong to a family where a majority of the members are involved in civil construction work. My father is an interior civil contractor, undertaking a variety of aesthetical works in interior design.

My keen interest was to learn about the structural design of civil structures. Thus, I made the decision to expand my expertise and research civil engineering more thoroughly.  I did my Bachelor's in civil engineering from DMCE, Mumbai University, and my Master's in Structural Engineering from the School of Infrastructure, IIT Bhubaneshwar. I learned about retrofitting reinforced concrete structures while conducting numerical and extensive experimental studies as part of my research at IIT Bhubaneshwar in the supervision of Prof. Goutam Mondal and Prof. Suresh Dash. Currently, I am pursuing my Doctoral degree from the Civil Engineering Department of IIT Bombay where I am working under the guidance of Prof. Arghadeep Laskar and Prof. Manish Kumar

Ongoing Research

Earthquake-confronted structural facilities such as hospitals, communication & data centers, and important government offices demand immediate aftermath functioning. Many other critical infrastructures such as nuclear power plants and small modular reactors need complete protection from seismic excitations. This gives rise to the idea of the three-dimensional isolation of structures. My field of interest in research is novel technologies that can provide three-dimensional isolation to structures, such as seismic metamaterials and isolator bearings.
