Innovations in
Nonlinear Control
The theory of linear systems and control is well-established. However, most classical and quantum mechanical systems are nonlinear, and these are ubiquitous in robotics, control of mechanical systems, NMR, etc. Unlike linear systems, the control parameter enters many of these systems in a multiplicative way and the evolution of such systems is confined to curved spaces we call manifolds or Lie groups. Over the past several decades, a rich subject has developed that studies such bilinear and nonlinear systems, and tools have been developed to understand controllability and optimal control of such systems. Moreover, new developments in quantum control and robotic systems have brought new structures into this subject.
This workshop seeks to bring together some of the key architects who have laid the foundations of nonlinear control theory, researchers who have been passionate about taking the theory to the stage of implementation in both the classical—large-scale and quantum—nano-scale worlds, together with several fresh talents working actively in nonlinear control and its associated areas. The objective is to engage in technical discussions to cross-inform and cross-fertilize their respective areas while understanding and appreciating the needs of the engineering side of nonlinear control.
