IIT Motorsports

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) at Illinois Institute of Technology offers students of all majors the opportunity to gain real life experience in designing, building, and promoting a competitive electric Formula SAE race car. By demonstrating team-oriented performance on the racetrack as well as in the garage, theoretical knowledge meets interdisciplinary skills. Through this, we aim to ensure the confidence and exceed the expectations of the university and our partners.

Our team provides numerous educational and professional skills related to vehicular design.

IIT (Illinois Institute of Technology) Motorsports is competing in its 14th consecutive year in Formula SAE competition and extends its streak this year in Formula Hybrid competition. In the 2020 online competition, IIT Motorsports placed 4th in the Design Presentation, and 4th in the Project Management Presentation, and has high hopes for improvement moving into the upcoming season.

2019-2020 Virtual Competition

A message from our 2019 - 2020 President, Thomas Spillman:

What a year! It seems like so long ago when we socialized over pizza and card games last fall. It’s been amazing to see the team come together to learn and work on this incredible project. Despite COVID-19, everyone pitched in to prepare over 170 pages of documentation for the judges. The final results are in, and we performed decently well. The results of the virtual competition place us sixth in the EV class. I am so excited for this upcoming season and know the team will go far under Ava and Saurabh’s leadership.
