Processes in the Continental Crust

The academic and research career of Prof. Somnath Dasgupta spans more than four decades. He completed his BSc (Geological Sciences) in 1971, MSc (Applied Geology) in 1974 and PhD in 1979, all from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. After serving in the Geological Survey of India for 4 years, he joined Jadavpur University as a Faculty in 1981 and worked as a Professor till 2007. He then moved to the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata as a Professor and Head of the Department of Earth Sciences. Further he moved to Assam University, Silchar as the Vice Chancellor, University of Allahabad and Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi as Chair Professors. He is currently an INSA Senior Scientist at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and an Honorary Professor at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata. Prof. Dasgupta has specializations in the fields of metamorphic petrology, ore geology and geochemistry. During his teaching career, he has mentored 22 PhD students, innumerable undergraduate students and inspired generations of geoscientists. A large number of his students occupy important academic and research positions in India and abroad.
