Om joined IISER Kolkata as an Integrated BS-MS student in 2021, specializing in Physical Sciences with a minor in Computational and Data Sciences. His research is at the intersection of optics, materials science, and engineering, with a primary focus on the development of advanced biosensing platforms.
A core member of the Light Matter Lab, Om works on projects involving Micro-Bubble Lithography (MBL), an indigenous technique for the precise self-assembly of mesoscopic particles on transparent substrates. His work includes developing a multiplexed diagnostic chip for parallel pathogen detection, creating a biodegradable, plant-based substrate for Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), and engineering a dual-ion sensor for the simultaneous detection of arsenic and fluoride in contaminated water.
This research has been recognized through the highly competitive NIDHI-PRAYAS grant from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Om is the first master's student across all IISERs and IITs to individually secure this grant, which supports the development of a functional prototype for the dual-ion sensor. He also presented this innovation at IInvenTiv 2025, India's largest R&D fair, where he received valuable feedback and support from industry experts and venture capitalists.
