Since 2019, May 12 has been celebrated as International Women in Mathematics Day. The day honors Maryam Mirzakhani, born on 12 May 1977, who is the first woman to win the Fields Medal in 2014. May 12 is a joyful opportunity for the mathematical community to celebrate women in mathematics. The celebration takes place every year. The day's goal is to inspire women everywhere to celebrate their mathematics achievements and encourage an open, welcoming, and inclusive work environment for everybody.
The May 12 initiative brings together local or virtual events celebrating women in mathematics from May 1 to June 15. Events can range from workshops, conferences, lectures, panel discussions, movie screenings, etc. This initiative is supported by several organizations for women in mathematics globally, including Indian Women and Mathematics (IWM). Since 2019, several events have taken place in India under this initiative.
