The Climate Change and Environment Core Competency Cell (C2EC3) organised a Model United Nations (Model UN) simulation with the objective of recreating the dynamics of international climate negotiations and deepening students’ understanding of global environmental governance.
The simulation was designed to move beyond theoretical discussions of climate diplomacy and instead immerse participants in the complexities, constraints, and competing interests that shape global climate negotiations. Through role-play, structured deliberation, and resolution drafting, the Model UN provided students with a practical understanding of how international environmental agreements are negotiated, contested, and implemented.
In an era of geopolitical fragmentation and contested multilateralism, the Model UN served as a microcosm of real-world diplomacy, allowing participants to experience firsthand the tensions between national interest and collective responsibility.
