The Model COP organized by C2EC3 sought to simulate real-world climate negotiations under the framework of the United Nations climate regime. This year’s theme - Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and Trade Equity placed participants at the intersection of climate ambition, global trade, and justice.
The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, introduced by the European Union, has become one of the most debated climate policy instruments in recent years. Designed to prevent “carbon leakage,” CBAM imposes a carbon price on imports into the EU based on the embedded emissions of certain goods. While the mechanism is framed as a climate action tool aligned with the Paris Agreement, it has raised pressing questions about equity, sovereignty, and the future of global trade governance.
The Model COP aimed to unpack these tensions through structured negotiation, country representation, moderated caucuses, and resolution drafting.
