It is very important that we use common terminology in all aspects of our program, from the freshman level through varsity. Common language allows us to seamlessly transition between levels and build on each previous layer. Below are some of the common terms to be used regarding our offensive system.
Advantage: An opening that is created that helps us attack the defense.
Auto: An action that leads to another action. "If... then..."
Ball Reversal: Move the basketball side-top-side.
Blind Pig: A back door cut after a pass to the high post.
Delay: Offensive action that goes through the top of the key in which a post player is filling.
Dominoes: Creating an advantage that leads to more advantages within an offensive possession.
Entry/Start: Any action that initiates or starts the offense in a given possession.
Hub: The point in Delay Action (generally, #5).
Neutral: When an offense does not have an advantage and the defense is allowed to be set.
Read Line: The 3 point line. If your defender is denying you past the 3 point line, you should back cut.
Semi-Transition: When a fast break lay-up isn't open. Early offense before the defense is completely set.
Slot: Area on the court where the free throw lane would extend to the volleyball lines near half court.
Support Action: If Motion breaks down or becomes stagnant, a support action can get it fixed on the fly.
Transition: A fast break. Getting down the floor to our offensive end before the defense gets set.
Wing: Area free throw line extended, one step off the 3 point line.
For action specific terminology (i.e. tight cut, get action, etc.), please review the various layers within our offense.
While we play position-less basketball, having a numbering system for plays, sets, and explaining Motion actions is important. Below is how we will number our positions for these purposes:
#1: Point guard, primary ball handler
#2: Shooting guard, secondary ball handler
#3: Small forward, or third guard
#4: Forward, bigger guard, or second post
#5: Primary post player
