Practices must be thoroughly planned before they are to begin. Plans should be in writing.
Work on the fundamentals on a daily basis. We are in the business of building basketball players.
Use breakdown drills on a daily basis. Teach them HOW to play offense and defense, not just how to run plays.
When conditioning, always use a basketball. We can get in shape doing drills and working them hard in that capacity.
Work on defense and rebounding every day.
Make practice harder than the games.
Provide players with an opportunity to lead during practice.
There is no walking on the basketball court at any time. Sprint to your next drill!
We need to learn to be good teammates. Players will cheer and encourage their teammates positively throughout the course of a practice.
There is no swearing in the gym.
Stress the importance of being punctual. If you’re on time, you’re late.
Keep practice fresh and exciting by keeping it moving. Don’t over-talk and make sure drills don’t drag on for too long.
Always try to end practice on a positive note.
Remember, it’s not what you teach, it’s what you EMPHASIZE.
