While the freshman and sophomore levels will play exclusively man-to-man defense, the varsity may utilize “Wolfpack”, or 2-3, defense.
“Wolfpack” is our 2-3 zone.
Each spot bears specific responsibilities.
x1 and x2 cover each wing, the top of the key, and the middle.
x3 and x5 cover each wing until they are bumped down by the wings, the blocks, the middle, and the short corner.
x4 covers the rim, each block, and the high post.
As the ball crosses half court, x1 and x2 should pinch the high post to prevent a middle pass.
x5 should be denying the post man the ball.
As the ball is passed to the wing, x5 steps out to guard it.
As soon as x1 can close out to the wing, he bumps x5 down.
x4 rotates over to cover the block.
x2 denies the high post.
x3 covers the middle.
After rotating, all five players are in position.
If the ball gets passed back to the top of the key, x2 needs to take the ball.
x1 covers the high post.
x3 rotates back to his block.
x4 rotates back middle.
x5 rotates back to his block.
After rotating, all five players are in position.
If the ball is passed to the other wing, x3 closes out to the ball until x2 bumps him down.
x1 rotates on the basket side of the high post and settles in to deny him the ball.
x4 covers the block.
x5 covers the middle.
After rotating, all five players are in position.
If the ball is entered to the high post, x4 closes out to the ball.
x1 and x2 flare out to the wings.
x3 and x5 cover the blocks.
If the ball is entered to the short corner, x4 and x5 would trap it.
x1 would rotate and shoot the gap.
x2 would rotate to cover the high post.
x3 covers the middle.
