Welcome to the website of the CASTILHO GROUP on Quantum Gases at the São Carlos Institute of Physics from University of São Paulo (IFSC/USP).
We are an experimental group studying the properties of quantum gases and exploring how these system can be used as quantum simulator platforms. For that, we work with two different experiments in separated laboratories: the NaK Lab, focused on missibility effects and out-of-equilibrium dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium atoms, and the 2DK Lab, where we will investigate the normal-to-superfluid phase transition and its characteristics in a 2D quantum gas of potassium-39 atoms. In all experiments, laser light and magnetic fields are used to cool, trap and manipulate the atoms at the nanokelvin limit, where the quantum state of these systems emerge.
