We left Baza very early in the morning. We flew from Málaga to Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia.
Today we woke up early because we were in Zagreb and we needed to get to our school in Split. The tram took us to the bus station and we left Zagreb. During the journey, it was rainy, so we decided to sleep or watch films or TV shows. The bus stopped halfway for a break. When we arrived to the bus station in Split, we were picked up by three school teachers. They took us to the school for a quick lunch and then we met the headmaster. She is very nice. After that, they took us on a school tour. It is a small school with 300 students. After eating, we went to the historic centre of Split. We did some sightseeing around the coast and its beaches. Finally, we came back to the hotel to relax and sleep soundly.
Today we woke up and ate an incredible breakfast. Later, the school teachers picked us up to go meet the students, and they performed popular songs of their country. Then, the teachers and some students from the school took us to see cliffs, churches, and very beautiful landscapes. When we were at the highest part of the mountain, we stopped at a zoo to see some animals like goats, rabbits, or turtles. Later, as we walked back down to the school, we saw the views from the Marjan viewpoint. After this, we changed teachers and students to take another tour of the historic center. First, we visited Diocletian's palace where we were able to appreciate the Romanesque and the Roman art. The palace is one of the most important monuments of the city. Then, we went to see the statue of Grgur Ninski, which we have been told gives good luck. As we were already a little hungry, the school teacher who was giving us the tour of the city took us to a traditional Croatian restaurant. Finally, the teachers left us free time, and we spent the afternoon doing some sightseeing and visiting the Game of Thrones museum. We enjoyed it a lot!
Today at 8 o'clock, several teachers picked us up and drove us to the school. Lessons began at 8.45, with Maths (6 grade). During this class we were able to observe how they teach in Croatian schools. We could see the use of interactive games and images to learn about Maths, in this case, they were learning about the area of triangles.
After this Math class, we had to attend another Math lesson; however, this was given by a different teacher. This time we learnt about the decimal numbers with the same techniques which we had seen before. After the break, in which the high school gave the students their breakfast. we attended an English class. The English teacher Peter was very good. We took part in a game where you had to look for different phrases and put them in order. We also liked the interactive team game the teacher prepared for the class. After these lessons, we finally went out for a break, in which Croatian students are given a free breakfast.
Finally, at two in the afternoon, there was a talk by the history teacher at this school. She told us about methodology, her approach to teaching and the strategies which she used with her students to teach history in a different way. Then, we went out for lunch. We had burgers and sandwiches.
After this, in the afternoon, we went to explore some areas of the city that we had not visited before, thus discovering beautiful viewpoints and areas . After a long walk around the city and a great afternoon, we finally went to the port to see the sunset. We could enjoy a beautiful evening and found out a great place to take photos of the harbour, the city and the sea.
After the sunset, at 8 in the evening, we had a quick dinner and rest before going to the hotel for a nice sleep.
This morning we got up at Villa Ángela hostel with our suitcases ready because we were leaving Split in the evening. We had breakfast and the teachers took us to school. There we had two English lessons with the teacher Inés. She teaches only speaking in English, correcting the children's pronunciation most of the time. In the first hour we played a game, which consisted of a girl named Jenny getting lost and with some papers that Inés gave us we had to found out who was the last person to see her, in the second hour we also played a game with some children a little younger than the previous ones. In the game there were two teams, one person from each team went to the blackboard where there were some words in English that the people who were on the board did not see and the members of his group had to explain that word to them so that they could say it, the one who said it first won.
After this we said goodbye to some teachers and they gave us arts and crafts made by them and chocolates, then we went to Diocletian's palace to take part in a "treasure hunt". We paired up with the children who came from school, this consisted of looking for a series surrounding monuments and taking a pictures with each of them, it was very cool because that way we could practice our English. At 2 pm we went to eat at a restaurant and explore the city even more, at 6 we took our suitcases to get on the bus destination Dubrovnik.
Today we visited Dubrovnik and discovered its impressive cultural heritage. In fact, Dubrovnik was added to the the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites for its outstanding medieval architecture. We really liked its fortified old town.
