In this mission , we will focus on the origin of life, from the Big Bang to any form of life sharing this planet with us.
We will explore the processes and mechanisms that lead to the enormous complexity and variety of life forms. We will also learn to create and interpret phylogenetic trees, in which evolutionary and ancestry relationships between different groups of organisms are organized and proposed.
In this mission we are going to solve, as a TEAM , two tasks:
TASK 1, about the origin of life on our planet from the first organic molecules to LUCA , the last universal common ancestor of all living beings and then to eukaryotic organisms and even to you .
TASK 2, on the key role of evolution for the increasing diversity and complexity of life forms on Earth. We will explore how all these factors and processes are related to the variation and inheritance of genetic material.
SUPPORTING RESOURCES FOR MISSION 1
In this mission you must complete the following deliveries for evaluation and qualification :
Team presentation on the origin of life on our planet (TASK 1)
Individual work document (TASKS 1 and 2).
In this assignment we will explore the origin of life, from the Big Bang to you through the first molecules and cells.
To solve this task each team member will receive a separate worksheet with two sections of text: a section on the origin of our planet, its hydrosphere, its atmosphere and the first cells and another section on the evolution of life from the first cells to generating all the biodiversity currently existing on our planet.
Each team member must create a slide about each of these sections. Then, you will put the slides in common and you will order them with the support of flipped classroom videos (in Edpuzzle) and of the videos in the project website. With this work, you will obtain a team presentation where you tell the whole story on how the first organic molecules and the first prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells appeared on Earth.
In addition to the team presentation, each member must complete the table of events "From the Big Bang to you" that appears in the individual work document.
We already know how life appeared on Earth and how the first eukaryotes formed. However, we don't know exactly how the other complex life forms on Earth developed. The key word is EVOLUTION .
In this assignment we will focus on evolution, learning about natural selection and the reasons why humans like you formed from a single cell that lived about 3 billion years ago.
For this task, you should watch the Edpuzzle video on "Origin of Life and Evolution", the videos below, and the supporting materials for the task. Only then can you answer the questions appearing in the individual work document for this mission.
To finish this mission, you must complete the team cooperative form. In this form, among other things, you will decide how it would seem fair to you that the qualifications received as a team are distributed among team members.
In addition, you must complete the individual cooperative form, to think about what you have learned and how you have done it. This will also allow me to understand your point of view on the tasks, team organisation and other topics.
